Rain Water ( 雨水 Yushui )

Rain Water is the second solar term in the Chinese lunar calendar, usually around February 18th-20th on the Gregorian calendar. The arrival of the Rain Water solar term signifies that spring is approaching, the temperature starts to rise, and rainfall gradually increases.

Meaning of the Rain Water Solar Term

• Natural Significance: Rain Water, as the name suggests, is the solar term when rainfall begins. At this time, the winter cold gradually recedes, the earth warms up, and rainwater nourishes all things, providing the necessary moisture for the growth and development of spring.
• Phenological Characteristics: “The first sign is otters offering fish; the second is wild geese flying north; the third is the budding of vegetation.” Otters begin to fish, wild geese start to fly back from the south, and trees also begin to sprout new buds, indicating a vibrant scene of spring.

Customs of the Rain Water Solar Term

• Returning to the Mother’s Home: In some places, there is a custom for daughters to return to their mother’s home during the Rain Water solar term. Married daughters will bring gifts back to their parents’ home to thank them for their upbringing.
• Sending Gifts: The son-in-law has to send gifts to his parents-in-law, usually a red cotton belt of one zhang and two chi long, called “receiving longevity,” which implies wishing the parents-in-law a long life.
